NovoTalk – Free Google Chat (Gtalk) on Windows Mobile

November 21st, 2009

1135772318 This is my first public release of an application that I made for Windows Mobile. I use Google Chat a lot, and felt the need of an application specific for that , which didn’t require third party registrations. There are a couple of them which connect directly to Google chat, but are paid. This is a restricted beta (for now), which I will provide on first come basis. Developers are welcome to share thoughts and help to improve this product. The aim is to develop a Windows Google Chat client replica for mobile platform.
Public Beta will be available shortly after the initial testing is complete.

Application Features

(v0.1 Beta)

Text messages
Avatars
Finger Touch/Scroll Friend List
Marquee for long status messages
New email notification
Tab based Chatting
Notification on new Message (sound + vibrate)
Detect Invisible Users
Friend list sorted just like Windows client (Gtalk) on basis of availabilty and name.
Cool GUI :)

Features to be worked out for next release (in order)

  1. Invisible mode support
  2. Show/Hide Offline Contacts
  3. Adding, removing and authorizing friends
  4. Account Registration
  5. Smilies in chat window
  6. Better & Faster GUI :) (Designers, heartily welcome to submit ideas)
  7. File Transfer (Jabber as well as Google’s implementation of Jingle, developers are welcome to work on this feature)
  8. Automatic Updates
  9. Search for a friend in list
  10. Themes

Additional Information

Call feature seems to be a distant addition. It is not well documented by Google, but it definitely will be added to NovoTalk.
I have no plans to release the source code, until I feel that this application is out of Beta. So yeah, at the end it might be an open-sourced application, but it will definitely be free.

NovoTalk requires .Net Compact Framework 3.5 to be installed on your Windows Mobile.

Important

This application works properly only on for QVGA devices(240×340), although later version might support other resolutions/smartphones
Version 0.1 Beta, will collect the MD5 hashes of device IMEI’s to keep a track of the number of testers. No personal information will be collected.

    Hi Stella,
I have sent the cab file to you, kindly make comments about your tests until bug reporting form is available.

  7. November 24th, 2009 at 04:19 | #7

    Hello Ishmeet,
Oh I have read the post on tweetce. It would be wonderful when you launch your client. I had plans on updating twitter status directly from NovoTalk, as soon as the status for Google chat is set. I have sent the NovoTalk cab to you.
And why not, I am always ready to help and test free applications :)

I am intersted in testing on my HTC Snap. Thank.

  16. November 30th, 2009 at 22:16 | #16

I am sorry, I have stopped giving out the cab file to the pre-release version now. There has been very little response from the current testers .
If I start getting ample feedback, I may give out cab once again. This is effecting future release of this application as well, because I am not sure what glitches are other users facing!

  17. December 1st, 2009 at 04:29 | #17

I have added the Bug Reporting and Feedback Form at the end of post. Current Beta testers can submit info from there.
    Thanks.

  18. December 4th, 2009 at 00:40 | #18

Hello Aditya. It would be a pleasure to beta test this application. I happen to use Google Talk everyday on my desktop computer and have yet to find a suitable client for communicating from on my mobile phone. This looks very promising!

  19. December 4th, 2009 at 07:37 | #19

Can you send me the beta cab file? I want to test it on my Touch HD with WVGA display. I think i can help you out with a touch screen version. Let me know. So far this app looks promising as per the screen shots.

  20. December 4th, 2009 at 08:59 | #20

Thanks for you interest in NovoTalk, Sebastian and Binoj.
    @Binoj
This pre-release version does not support WVGA. I will be releasing the next version before christmas(that’s my target) which will support all resolutions :) I would be delighted if you could test that version!
    @Sebastian
Please check your inbox and kindly leave a feedback. :)
    @Aditya Jha, javid
I have sent the file to as well, please report bugs, if any.

    Hello Aditya…

So this is my reviews after using Novotalk for 2 weeks.
    1) I must say Amazing application. We do not have a single application for Gtalk on WinMob and your application brings relief to many people.
    2) Loved the feature which shows the chat window as soon as you receive a new message.
    3) It is fast and absolutely no delay.
4)The resolution is surely an issue. I use VGA and it doesn’t show up correctly. Its all cramped up.
5)The vibrate feature dint work for me. Also it would be nice if it could also produce a visible alert. Also make sure it works if the phone is on standby (screen is off)

Rest I think this is wonderful and I am sure people who sign up for beta give you some feedback which would help this application to grow.
If there is anything else let me know.. or if you have a new version … send a copy here … :)

    till then..
    keep up the good work..
    Ishmeet

  22. December 11th, 2009 at 22:55 | #22

Thanks for the feedback Ishmeet. A new version is under development that fixes all the problems, plus it has many additional features :)
Can u tell me the phone model that you use? I am not sure why the vibrate feature did not work!
