Update Gtalk status from Spotify

September 12th, 2009

spotify-logoSpotify is an excellent free P2P music streaming service that is currently available to residents of UK, France and neighboring countries. Most of the Gtalk users like to update their status with the current track that they are listening to. Gtalk supports Windows Media Player, Winamp and iTunes. Now that Spotify is becoming a craze, I thought of making a small application to update the Gtalk status directly from the current track from Spotify.

This application is written in C#, and hence will require the latest .net Framework to be installed on your machine. At present only windows version of Spotify is supported as official Gtalk application is not available for other platforms. Feel free to post bugs and improvements, although its a small application.:)

This is a early version, hence there might be some bugs. Please report them at aditya[at]novocained[dot]com

EDIT : This app somehow fails to work when you select “Current Music Track” option from Gtalk. Set the status to “Available” or “Busy”

Doesn’t work – It does detect the song correctly from Spotify but doesn’t update my Gtalk. I tried signing in/out of Gtalk and changing the status to current music track but no effect.

    Any ideas?

I have the latest .net framework and run Vista.

Thanks for your feedback Pranay :)
Just keep the status as “Available” or “Busy” whatever you prefer. If you select “Current Music Track” sometimes there might be conflicts due to Gtalk activating its own plugin. Let me know if this doesn’t work.

Thank you very much for this!

Just a comment: if the spotify window is closed but spotify is still running (visible in the system tray) your application doesn’t work :( . It thinks Spotify is not running/playing.
    Can you fix this?
Also, it would be great if your application could also be minimized to the system tray instead of the main taskbar :)

    Hi Mikey,
Thanks! Well, I wrote this tool some time back and never really looked at it again :) , although there is a better version which I have not released into public, as the guys at Spotify might not like it ;) … It even captures the album art and saves it for your media.
I will add the “minimize to tray” option and see that it works with Spotify minimized as well.
